A new team will be raising the Aegis of Champions in The International 10 (TI10).
Back-to-back defending TI champions OG had their hopes for a three-peat ended after getting upset by Team Spirit in a 2-0 sweep in their elimination match on Friday (15 October).
Despite placing third in Group A during the Group Stage and earning an upper bracket berth, OG were quickly knocked down to the lower bracket by rivals Team Secret during the opening day of the Main Event on Tuesday (12 October).
The defending champions survived their dramatic first elimination match against North America's Quincy Crew, which pit them against Eastern Europe's Team Spirit in the third round of the lower bracket.
Despite being entering the match as the underdogs, Spirit started the series strong and were overwhelming the defending champions with their aggression. However, OG were able to keep things close behind Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan's Tiny, who was almost single-handedly keeping Spirit from taking full control of the game.
Spirit offlaner Magomed "Collapse" Khalilov on Magnus ended up being the difference maker, however, as his pinpoint Skewer and Reverse Polarity placements during clashes gave his team the edge. In the sequence that spelled the beginning of the end for OG, Collapse scored a huge pickoff on SumaiL by masterfully pulling him all the way into his team's fountain.
With Collapse constantly ruining OG's positioning, Spirit midlaner Alexander "TORONTOTOKYO" Khertek on Ember Spirit was given free rein to wreak havoc over the defending champions and force them to call GG after 45 minutes of action.
Despite the loss, SumaiL still notched 14 kills against four deaths. Meanwhile, TORONTOTOKYO had a series-high 20 kills and 15 assists against just one death, with Spirit carry Illya "Yatoro" Mulyarchuk on Faceless Void pitching in with 11 kills of his own while Collapse had a series-high 32 assists.
OG seemed shaken in the do-or-die game two, as they started folding under the relentless pressure from Spirit and were down 10-30 in kills 28 minutes in. Spirit had all the confidence in the world on their march to victory, with TORONTOTOKYO even all-chatting "ez game" after scoring an Ultra Kill in one of the team's many victorious clashes.
Despite the defending champions' best efforts to mount a comeback, Spirit were able to destroy OG's Ancient and end their hopes for a three-peat after a 30-minute rout. Yatoro on Lifestealer notched a game-high 14 kills against just one death with TORONTOTOKYO not far behind with 13 kills against two deaths. Collapse, who was definitely the MVP for Spirit in the series, had another game-high in assists with 25.
With their loss, OG bow out of TI10 in 7th-8th place with US$1,000,500 in consolation.
Meanwhile, Spirit secured a Top 6 finish and at least US$1,400,600. They will be facing fellow Eastern European team Virtus.pro (VP) later in the day to see if they can build on that.Team Spirit Dota 2 roster:
